“An Evening with Sam Venable”
120 enthusiastic supporters of UCHS gathered to enjoy dinner and entertainment. And in spite of tough times, those folks donated $9400 to help the Humane Society care for animals in need. The keynote speaker for the event was Sam Venable, a humor columnist for the Knoxville News Sentinel. Sam is a native of Knoxville, but his wife, Mary Ann, has roots in Maynardville — her mother was raised here. Mary Ann introduced Sam to the group and also showed a painting she did of a home in Maynardville.
Sam entertained the crowd with his own bizarre look at life, summed up by the phrase, “You Don’t Have To Be A Liar to Make This Stuff Up”. He kept the overflowing crowd in stitches telling stories that he says he could not make up — ”They are all real.” He credits television, the Weather Channel, the Do-It-Yourself Channel, fishing shows and commercials for most of the material in his stories. Sam is also the author of 10 books and 150 articles.
Many thanks to our generous sponsors for this event:
